What We Do
Six Island produces international award-winning diverse-voice features, TV series, documentaries and digital media.
Founded in 2000 by producer Paul Scherzer (Europe’s ACE organization, Canadian Academy, Canadian Producers Assoc.), Six Island maintains a clear focus on international co-production.
For over 20 years Six Island has worked with some of the most diverse filmmakers in Canada and internationally, including Oscar-nominated Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania, Canada’s LGBTQ bad boy Bruce LaBruce, Syrian-Palestinian Ruba Nadda, Iranian Asghar Massombagi, Indo-Canadian Jennifer Baichwal, Puerto Rican Alejandro Alvarez, Indo-Parsi Niara Modi, and Lebanese-Syrian-Armenian Noura Kevorkian.
In order to help realize these diverse filmmakers’ visions, over the past two decades Six Island has partnered with such renowned companies as ARTE (FR/DE), Cinetic (US), Playtime (FR), GunPowder&Sky (US), SWR-HR (DE), Beta Cinema (DE), Tribeca Film Institute (US), UFA Fiction (DE), BFF/Indie Sales (BE/FR), The Doha Film Institute (QA), and the National Film Board of Canada.
Six Island features have screened at the world’s top international fests including Cannes, Venice, Berlin, TIFF, SXSW, Busan, San Sebastian, and Thessaloniki.
While programmed at top documentary festivals including IDFA, Hot Docs, and CPH:Dox, Six Island theatrical docs defy pigeonholing, appearing also at TIFF, Cannes, Sundance, Karlovy Vary, Zurich and Thessaloniki among other prestigious festivals, and making sales around the world.
